Penrith's next generation of sports stars welcomed by Mayor
Fifteen athletes from the Western Sydney Academy of Sport were welcomed to the council chamber this week.
Fifteen scholarship athletes from the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) took time out from training to thank Penrith Mayor Todd Carney for Council's ongoing support of the academy.
The young athletes represent disciplines from netball and hockey to swimming, road cycling and athletics. Several are tipped to make state and national junior squads in the coming twelve months.
WSAS chief executive Geoff Schoer said Council's $185,000 annual contribution funded scholarship places that would otherwise be out of reach for families in Penrith's growth corridors.
"This isn't sponsorship — it's community investment," Cr Carney told the athletes. "You're already representing Penrith. Our job is to make sure where you come from doesn't determine how far you can go."
