Penrith cheers north-south rail priority on IA list
Council is delighted by news that full-length north-south rail has been placed on Infrastructure Australia's 2026 Priority List.
Penrith City Council has welcomed Infrastructure Australia's decision to add a full-length north-south rail link from Macarthur to Marsden Park to its 2026 Infrastructure Priority List.
Mayor Todd Carney said the decision was overdue. "With the opening of Western Sydney International Airport now only months away, it is more than critical that attention shifts to what's next for the region," he said.
Council has advocated for a north-south rail line for more than a decade, arguing that the east-west Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line, while transformative, only solves one half of the region's transport problem.
A business case for the first stage, from St Marys to Western Sydney Airport, is already underway. The Priority List inclusion paves the way for Federal funding consideration in next year's Budget.
