New alcohol-free zone to be implemented near Log Cabin

Memorial Avenue between Tindale Street and the Log Cabin pub will be declared an alcohol-free zone from 1 October following a unanimous vote at last week's ordinary meeting.

The change follows a six-month investigation by Council and Penrith Police, who reported a 38 percent rise in noise and littering complaints along the strip over the past two summers.

Acting Inspector Daniel Storey said the new powers would let officers tip out open containers without issuing a fine. "It's a much lighter-touch tool than what we have now and it removes the source of the problem on the spot," he said.

Signage will be installed in the coming weeks. The Log Cabin and adjacent licensed venues are not affected.
